Thank you to netgalley,, the author and the publisher for the advance copy to read.

This is my first book by S E Lynes. I really enjoyed the writing and the depth of the characters. You can tell that the author wanted the characters to feel real and not just superficial in a story.

The plot was good and it kept me hooked as I needed to see how it all panned out. That being said it was all very obvious.

It also got slightly annoying with the repetitive notions of Will and Jessica. Also so much could have been resolved if they just spoke to each other instead of acting like children.

Overall a decent read.

writing: good | plot: very average | ending: woah nelly

my opinion

First of all, thank you to becbingesbooks for the lovely buddy read and bish sesh as always LOL. Together, we clocked every twist in this book, and while I'm not someone whose rating depends solely on the shock-factor, it was disappointing. I can't clock EVERYTHING okay?? Not with this single digit IQ. You need to bamboozle me at least once.

Besides the predictability, this was repetitive. The first 60% is a family drama with a dash of suspense. Each pov can be summarized as:

Jessica: Will is a certified bum. Also, why can't he read my mind? Just because I said I wanted a divorce—in writing, no less—doesn't mean I actually WANT one. How can he not understand that?

Will: The kids would've been taken away by CPS if I wasn't an unemployed loser... I mean house husband/life coach.

Finally the pace and action ratchets up in the last 40%, but seeing as it all came to a predictable end, it wasn't that exciting upon reflection. At least the writing was solid.

I say this with all the disrespect I can muster: Will should not be allowed to vote. How many red flags does one need to be deep throated with before he clues the fuck in?

Very middle of the road book. Sadly, do not recommend. What I do recommend is talking to your spouse about major conflicts before it spirals into absolute mayhem. Thanks.

pros & cons

pros: writing was solid

cons: extremely predictable, slow but no emotional pay-off, miscommunication trope on bath salts, repetitive, will is the dumbest man to walk the earth you can't convince me otherwise

Let me start with this is not the most realistic book I’ve ever read, but wow it was entertaining.  I was drawn into it from the start and knew something was off, but it took a long time for me to figure it out.

What starts out as a huge family drama turns into a twisty psychological adrenaline filled page turner.  That last 25%.  I could not put it down.

3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ stars!  Jessica and Will, a therapist  are married with two children and they have a great life and just celebrated their wedding anniversary.  Until on the same day, someone texts Jessica pictures of Will and a woman spending time together and going places and doing things that Will should not be doing as a married man.

Jessica shows Will the pictures and asks who she is and what was he doing with this woman, and he says that he cannot say because he promised the woman that he wouldn’t tell anyone who she is and what is going on with her.  This doesn’t sit well with Jessica and she kicks him out of their home.

While out, Will meets Ian in a bar, someone he has never met before and opens up to him and tells him some of what is going on with him and Jessica.  Ian befriends Will and helps him by giving him a place to live while he is going through this.  Will, at first doesn’t find it strange that Ian wants to help him because he needs the help, and Ian continues to assist Will in other ways. As time goes on, Jessica and Will’s relationship doesn’t get better, and they separate and it seems as though Ian is supporting Will through this but what does he have to gain if they divorce? Why is he being so helpful to Will and doesn’t want anything in return. Or does he? This is a good popcorn thriller.

This is a tough review to write as I have loved all of Susies previous novels, I didn't dislike this by any means but it felt as though it was a book of two halves. The 2nd part of the book was fast paced and tense as Will finally came to the conclusions that he had but I felt the first part was dragged out slightly too much. To me it was a tit for tat situation between Will and Jessica and I just wanted to bang their heads together and tell them to communicate with each other, instead of listening to "well meaning" friends. However I'm fully aware if they'd done that there would be no book, and perhaps this is the intention of the author to draw us further into the story. I was correct in a couple of suspicions that I had, but this didn't lesson the tenseness at the end of the novel. I'm basing my star rating on the 2nd half of the book which I did really enjoy.

I part loved and hated this book at the same time.  The story started off well but then the main characters started to annoy me very much.  I mean, why couldn’t they just talk to each other?  but then when I thought about it a bit, if they had there wouldn’t be a story to tell at all.   One of the characters Will, I found to be a bit dim and naive too, why didn’t he see what was in front of his face?  However, When you are feeling down and someone pays an interest I can also see how you can miss certain things and just want someone to befriend you as that’s what you need in that moment.

I enjoyed the book, maybe not so much as the others I have read by this author, I could see where the book was going quite early on so unfortunately there were no surprises along the way for me.

Than you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
