Pretty good book but a tad too long and Jakes has a tendency to make characters sound corny but it was still entertaining to say the least.

really clunky writing. Not a big fan. I have liked Jakes other stuff but this was pretty bad

3.75/5. Not as good as the north and south trilogy, but fantastic jakes historical fiction nonetheless.

I made it! All 1100+ pages of this brick of a book. If you're the type of person who likes historical fiction in terms of a family saga, this might be for you. For me, I've only enjoyed about half of the ones I've read.

Jakes covers a lot of ground in this novel, from immigration, to German pride, to unionization, to beer brewing, to the World's Fair in Chicago, to the birth of moving pictures, to a war in Cuba with Teddy Roosevelt. It was just a bit too much to chew. And then when characters from 500 pages ago suddenly pop up completely out of context... well, you lost me.

I rather liked the characters (though I did not love them). I can see the appeal of the book, but personally, did not care for it.
