I found the main character really objectionable, and MHC is not great at writing in the first person. Ending was super meh, IMO.

Written in the early 2000’s, this book had a better editor and less plot holes, but was far less interesting and engaging

This was a pretty good book up until the end. The end felt rushed and not thoroughly done

This was a fast paced summer mystery read. It's been a long time since I've read a MHC book. I am not opposed to picking one up every once in awhile. She's not a writer that I have to read all of her work, or that I necessarily wait for to publish, but she's entertaining.

"Ellie Cavanaugh was only seven when her older sister, Andrea, was murdered near their home in rural Westchester County. It was Ellie's testimony that led to the conviction of a man, who steadfastly denied his guilt, but spent twenty-two years in prison. When he comes up for parole, Ellie protests, but the convicted killer is set free and returns home. Ellie also returns, intent on writing a book that will prove his guilt. But as she delves deeper into her research, she uncovers horrifying facts that shed a new light on her sister's murder. And with each discovery, she comes closer to a confrontation with a desperate killer..." (From Amazon)
I stopped reading Clark for awhile for no particular reason and picked up this novel at the library as a Super Loan (7 day loan). This novel brought me back to when I first started reading her books and throughly enjoyed the story and suspense.

This was my very first Mary Higgins Clark book. I've loved her books ever since.

I attempted to read this book several years ago and put it down only a couple chapters into it. I don't remember why I didn't finish it, but when I picked it up 3 days ago, I was immediately caught up in the narrative and all the possible directions it could take. The story was a slow build, involving many avenues of investigation, but ultimately came together well.
My 3.5 star rating comes from two things:
1.) I found myself bored with the dialouge pretty regularly. Almost every sentence starts with someone's name, and nobody says the name of the person they are speaking to at the beginning of EVERY line. The information from characters was good, and their interactions captured the dynamic of Ellie's relationships well, but the actual writing became monotonous quickly.
2.) I am actually pretty disappointed with the abrupt ending. One small chapter to wrap things up (some of which do wrap up nicely), and that short space is not enough to do justice to the life Ellie leads after everything that takes place in the book.
Outside of those two complaints, overall, I enjoyed the book and may even read it again in a year or two!
