Four stars for Nick's theatre and acting stories which were super lovely to listen to! Found this hard to listen to towards the beginning of the book however with some quite cruel descriptions of taking advantage of Christians for sex, but the book eventually got much better around half way. As expected, loved the chapter on Parks and Rec and the end
I got this book as an audiobook for in the car. Read by the author I thought it would be a funny light hearted time passer. What I expected was some one liners about bacon and "Ron Swansonesque" machismo about scotch and wood working.
What I got was a surprisingly well written story about a boy growing up in the country and making his dream come true as an actor. Offerman's view of life is both positive and grateful as he tells in great details the luck that caused him to reach his dream. He shows he is more than a clown and a stereotype, but a gifted writer, capable of excellent prose.
His philosophies and stories left me charmed, inspired and entertained.
Highly recommend this.

An excellent look into the life of Nick Offerman. Hilarious and witty throughout.
I had high hopes, I liked reading about his childhood and his marriage, but there is a long space in between that dragged on and on. I appreiate and agree with his thoughts on hard work, but this book was less than stellar.
Hilarious and poignant. Nick Offerman's view of the world - there are opinions, stories, anecdotes, declarations. I absolutely love him as an actor and now I enjoy his thoughts as a person. I'm not usually a nonfiction-reader, but this was fantastic and easy to read.
Hate to categorize it so low because I love Ron Swanson and enjoy Nick Offerman in interviews but the book itself was boring for me and hard to power through. It is much more of a memoir than the humorous self-help/how-to guide or essay book that I was hoping for, based on the title. I'll keep enjoying him on talk shows and podcasts and as an actor but this book just didn't do it for me.
This was a gift, otherwise I never would have considered it. I've never seen Nick Offerman in his most well-known role, so I read the book not really knowing who he is or seen him perform. I found the book entertaining. He's not an author so his writing style is folksy conversational with more than a little blue language. And he's not really a comedian, so don't expect a lot of jokes and funny lines. There is humor and a couple of laugh out loud moments. I really enjoyed hearing about his career as a largely struggling actor and his life on the farm. The courtship of his wife not so much. He works hard, plays hard, loves his friends and family, is intelligent and seemingly well-read (at least plays), can tell a pretty good story, and can build things out of wood. He seems like a nice, interesting guy. Offerman is clearly riding the crest of his popularity with this book. But who can blame him? The book is of most value for young people starting out an acting career. It's a nice case study of the process with some useful insight into what to expect at auditions, getting parts, and all the while staying upbeat. He intersperses each chapter with his take on how people - men in particular - should behave. I don't disagree with much of what he said though your mileage may vary. I guess if you like the Ron Swanson character, this book is for you. Otherwise, it's a show business reminiscence.
I love me some Nick Offerman. I know a lot of other reviewers said this got preachy, especially the second chapter, and yeah, that can be true. It didn't really bother me because I fully agree with his views re: separation of church and state, and the Bible being basically a nice story but basically fiction. I listened to the audiobook and that was an excellent decision.

A lovely nostalgic wax from Nick Offerman, where he sprinkles life advice amongst tales from his youth, early career, and love life. As one would expext, he takes his time telling each story, and the book effortlessly captures Offerman's cadence and style. A must read for all fans!
It was ok. Like, reading Ron Swanson's life story. A bit o' language I didn't want to read, some chapters I skipped, but eh, what I did read was ok I guess.
