It an interesting read but at the end of the book, Doris's selfishness was so annoying it was hard to finish. She always had to be the victim, even if she just robbed a mom-and-pop store of thousands of dollars. She just assumed that every jewelry store was corrupt and was scamming the insurance agencies. A store clerk was literally crying in front of her about the robbery and Doris didn't feel any empathy. Doris totally discounts that being robbed makes you feel like shit and that she most likely made a ton of people lose their jobs. Also, she would just disappear for random spans of time and not keep in touch with her loved ones. She showed no character growth or trust in people in this entire book.

This lady is hilarious. The book has some weird spots but it's totally worth listening to the Audiobook narrated by Robin Miles.

Doris was delightful, the perfect pick for our December read.

I enjoyed this quite a bit. You have to take it with a shaker of salt - Doris even admits that at the end of the book. But I can't be mad at someone who made her living stealing from rich white people and whatever else, I think her love for her mom and her fierce love for independence is real and admirable.

A roller coaster of a read since you’re always wondering if this is the job that lands her in jail. Eventually the jobs all get a little repetitive as her plan plays out the same way almost every time.

This is told entirely in Doris’s voice. It would have been interesting to include police accounts, newspaper articles or other information to round out the story. Still, her point of view is clear and (seemingly) honest. Well worth a couple hours of your time.

This is an autobiographical account of Doris Payne, from her childhood to being one of the most notorious jewel thieves in Europe and the USA.

The story is extraordinary and is very easy to read. However, Doris said towards the end that some of the things in the book might not be accurate.

The story doesn't go into the psychology of why she took all those jewels. It's an autobiography so it tells who Doris is and a bit of the reason she did what she did. The actual jewel thefts and her escapes are remarkable.

I would highly recommend this book.
