This was an enthralling work. So many wonderful concepts, including the idea of two universes communicating with one another but not able to actually visit the other.
This book is in three parts, and all of them are fascinating. The middle third in particular describes a race so alien and strange, but also familiar. My understsnding is that writing aliens was new to Asimov at the time this was written, and he does an extraordinary job.
This is going to go on my list of books that completely surprised me and that I will think about long after reading.
This is also yet another of my joint Hugo/Nebula reads, and I think this work is very deserving of that distinction.

Amazing book. This was my first Asimov and I was not disappointed. As a hard sci-fi fan and a mathematician, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I think the only complaint I have is of a lack of cohesiveness, which is something Asimov often troubles me with. But each of the three parts of the story were all very enjoyable—I just wish they were tied together a little stronger both in theme and narrative. But all the concepts and ideas were very clever and properly explored, as you would expect from the Applying Logic to Concepts and Ideas Guy.
Four stars for the story, three stars for the characters. None of the characters, particularly in the third section, were relatable or likeable, and their interactions with each other were fairly dull. However, the story and plot line made up for it all. I couldn’t say if the science is feasible, but to be honest I don’t really care, it was an excellent story telling. The second section was fascinating to read.

Oh jeez this book could have been something so special. Broken up onto 3 sections, section 1 is pretty painful. Section 2 makes reading the whole books mostly worth it, and section 3 tries to bring it all together but sadly does so in a lackluster way. I won’t even bother commenting with a feminist critique.
