Audiobook - 5 hours 18 minutes - I thought this was a good representation of teen suicide - it wasn't oversensationalised, and I liked how it wasn't caused by a simplistic list of reasons, like in other media I could name. The perspective of an older sister was interesting to read from, the way she blamed it on herself even though she didn't know the reason why her brother took his own life. However, there were some parts that fell a little flat to me - I wasn't too keen on the subplot with Sadie talking about ghosts. I was scared that the book would lean into this too much, bordering on paranormal, which impacted my enjoyment of the book somewhat, but I am glad that that wasn't the way it was written.

I thought it was a very engaging, raw book and I enjoyed reading it. However, it bugged me the way mental health issues and actual chemical imbalances were never really brought up or discussed overtly because they are a major contributing factor to suicide. I don’t think anyone is driven to suicide solely because of suffering adversity in life as this book kind of portrayed it, but actually some kind of mental illness and depression is often a contributing factor.

I went to a high school where there was at least one student suicide every year. There have been two suicides within my own family, though I was too young at those times to remember, I do know the gaping hole that they’ve left. It is an unavoidable part of my life. 

The Last Time We Say Goodbye is a beautiful story about grief, guilt, and the impact that is left when someone takes their own life. I feel fortunate to have found the book and experience the catharsis that comes with reading it. This is one that will stick with me for a very long time.
