Pleasant enough weekend reading. Nothing special but also not annoying.

I am genuinely terrible at guessing the twists of mysteries so when I do predict it early on I always feel a little cheated. The P&P/Emma character interaction here was not what I hoped. I never imagined Emma Woodhouse and Elizabeth Bennet to be quite the types to take to each other right away. I wish there had been a little more character analysis of the protagonists. And lifting the gypsies from Emma as the main plot device made sense but felt awkward in a modern adaptation where they cannot retain the black-and-white "otherness" of Austen's time.

I have enjoyed the Mr. and Mos Darcy mysteries in the past, and I did enjoy this one as well. That being said this one was a little on the sleeper side of cozy and it did not embroil me in the solving of the poisoning as deeply as I would have liked.

Another nice Darcy mystery from Ms. Bebris. I liked how she gave Emma a larger role than she did the previous Austen Heroines. And poor Miss Bates, matched up yet again. At least she was not matched with Mr. Woodhouse this time!

The author must have just learned the word "se'enight" or something because she included it about every other page. Boring.

This entry in the series threw the Darcys into the midst of a murder in Emma Woodhouse's hometown of Highbury, and seemed a better fit with the feel of [b:Emma|6969|Emma|Jane Austen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1373627931l/6969._SY75_.jpg|3360164] than previous books in the series. However, unlike earlier mashups, this one included Emma's POV as well as Darcy's and Elizabeth's, with the end result that Elizabeth felt a bit superfluous to the plot. Emma played such an active role that I think it might have worked better to have Darcy investigating with Mr. Knightley and Elizabeth...back home in Pemberley? I don't know; it couldn't be a "Mr. and Mrs. Darcy mystery" with only one of the Darcys, but Elizabeth wasn't essential to the plot this time.

The murderer/denouement felt a little un-Austen-like; yes, there were gypsies in Emma, but they're pretty much just a brief plot device, so it felt off for them to be so integral to the mystery plot.

The ending chapter clearly sets up the next book to be P&P + [b:Persuasion|2156|Persuasion|Jane Austen|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1385172413l/2156._SY75_.jpg|2534720], so I guess I'm in it till the bitter end.
