This book is not for me. I read it for a book club. While clearly fictional, the author did a lot of research and has a bibliography at the end. However, it's a fine line to write about both a gender and culture not your own and I don't think he was always successful.
Feels like the author didn't plan for an ending which made this book stink
This is a tough one for me to rate, because it was so hot and cold. There were parts I loved and times I hated to put the book down, and other times that I was simply skimming and skipped past parts that didn't hold my interest. I felt that the main character, May Dodd, didn't have a distinct voice and that greatly affected my reading. I loved the premise and the historical context, the character of Phemie and the brutality and beauty of life at that time. I certainly recommend it and would give it 3.5 stars if I could.
Heart wrenching.
May Dodd was committed to a mental institution by her parents for having children out of wedlock with her lover. When she is approached with a chance to be a part of a government program to be a bride to a Cherokee, she jumps at the chance. Thus starts a great adventurous novel For her and fellow brides. I enjoyed and wanted to cry in many parts during this unique read.
I felt as if I was right in the middle of the actual journey of this novel, but glad I wasn’t.
I have always had great sympathy for the Native Americans and what was done to them. This is a work of fiction but I couldn’t stop reading. I’m sure that there were many factual events woven into this story and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I read this from the Libby app through my library and had to wait forever.
