This book didn't live up to my (admittedly) very high expectations, but it was still an enjoyable read/listen. The voice acting, in particular, was commendable.

I wish I had some content warnings before I read this book. It seriously hindered my ability to enjoy and get into the book. Also, fairly long conjecture and setup because it's obviously the first of a series (which is fine but took SO long to get anywhere). Some unresolved plot lines or tidied up quick without deference to all the prior build up. Intrigued enough to read the second of the series but also can't be bothered to search it out. I recognize it is a beloved series which also makes me consider continuing to see if it gets better.

Tightly written mystery. The differences from and commentary on the Doyle novels was entertaining. My favorite twist was who supports Charlotte as Dr. Watson supports Sherlock Holmes.

I was not expecting the resolution of the mystery, and found it rather jarring for reasons I will put in the content warning section below. The resolution made sense, and the story hangs together well, and the through-lines of narrative about "ruined" ("scarlet") women were really interesting -- the ways in which women had to cope with being damaged in the eyes of the world.
