I'm so glad I experienced this book. It was such an interesting format, I've never read a graphic memior before and the art style reminded me of newspaper cartoons which really leant in to the theme of the novel overall. The story deals with such heavy and important content through a child's eyes and it is done so expertly that the jarring comparisons on the page left me speechless. Truly a piece of literary art, on such an unspoken piece of history. Can't wait to finish the collection.

The young adult fiction book Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi tells the story of a young girl that grew up during the Iranian Revolution. Marjane, the main character, was forced to mature at a young age in order to understand the Iranian War. We follow Marjane through her childhood and into teenage-hood to see how her life is impacted by changes in her country. Living in a country where kids are brainwashed and there is no freedom of speech, Marjane struggles to figure out who to side with and how to act. The book develops a theme of the impact of war on children as Marjane is forced to mature earlier than the average child due to the war. All the characters are realistic and layered, as they all are based on real people and they all seem to live their lives as normal people would. They all change throughout the story, as the time they live in demands change. Marjane seems the most dynamic out of all the characters because she is maturing and becoming a young adult(you can see some change in the way which she acts especially around page 136 and forward) during a hard time to grow up. The graphic novel is very informative but makes learning fun. It was very intriguing and I could not stop reading it after I started. I would totally recommend it!

Very informative but never dry, all while establishing a strong emotional connection and somehow managing to be funny despite the heavy subject matter. I also really liked how dense of a graphic novel it was, sometimes I feel like graphic novels are so short on text that you just breeze through them, but these pages took time to get through and that allowed me to really sit with and process the story.

Overall a great example of how well text and illustrations can compliment each other and create something bigger than the sum of their parts.

Read this in little over a day. Very quick and easy to read, especially after viewing the film which was not in English as the book. It’s such an amazing story that I’m disappointed I didn’t pick up the complete Persepolis instead to continue on reading, but now have to wait.

The story is about a young girl growing up during war and revolution, watching change in Iran during the 70s and 80s.

It was amazing to read and my first graphic novel. Highly recommend to anyone.

On a quest to learn more about the Islamic revolution in Iran from an Iranian perspective for a personal project. I loved that her memoir was in graphic novel form, which to me, was a better and unique representation. I loved how her perspectives of friends and ideals changed, but she was never right for Iranian life. I loved her parents and her grandmother. And I definitely learned a lot. Although, I didn’t like what she did to that innocent man and so glad her grandmother yelled at her. Sometimes, she was too much and you got the feeling that some close people wanted to slap her.

I do recommend this book for getting this different perspective to what you see on the news and read in books. Plus, the graphic novel format made it amazing. Loved the drawings
