Not much to say this was kind of like reading a textbook. Not really much to talk/think about because i was just getting information.
A few points
- I liked her uncle anoosh, her grandmother, and her father
- The cute memories of her with her uncle ❤️. I also love and hate the two ducks out of bread part because it’s so cute but also so sad.
- Her childhood is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time.
- The part where the bombs destroy her neighbors and then she sees the dead body is actually so terrifying and i don’t understand how she mentally had no ptsd or anything. It was kind of just glossed over.

This was the first graphic novel I have ever read and this novel set the bar very high. The emotions really rush through you throughout the entire novel. You really build a tight connect with Marji as the novel progresses. The ending is really good, though it leaves you with questions. The illustrations are very symbolic and add interest to the story. When I began reading this novel, I didn’t know much about Iran, but I had a fascination with the culture and I wanted to travel there. After reading the novel, I feel like I learned a lot about Iran, and I’m even more interested in it. I feel like this is a very important novel for westerners to read because we often see the Middle East as one big unit, and this novel really helps break down that boundary we have.
Probably a 3.5. This was such an interesting way to discuss this history, but I think my lack of knowledge on the subject impacted how I felt about it. I didn't realize there was a part 2, but I might have to read that too because part 1 left things a bit hanging.
