I feel like I read a different ending than everyone else. I’d go back and re read but my library loan expired and I’m not that invested. My takeaway was that
Mary did give Alyssa the pills that resulted in her death, inadvertently or not. But my impression was that it was accidental; a case of a child not knowing how to care for an infant. The bleach in the coffee paints a different picture but I feel Mary can be both a psychopath and someone who accidentally killed a baby in her care.
Anyway, mostly enjoyable. A solid “not bad” read.

While I was engrossed in the story, it was dragging on with how much detail was provided. Because of that, I was looking forward to the ending. The twist at the end was definitely a surprise for me and I don't think I fully appreciated it. It felt like all the "work" I put into reading was wasted since Mary turned out to be an unreliable narrator. I think I'd appreciate the book if I read it again with the new perspective of Mary lying, but there's no way I'm re-reading it.

Unreliable narrator at its best. Of course, it doesn't really hold up against scrutiny but it honestly doesn't matter. It's so beautifully written, engaging, suspenseful, and tragic.

Mary killed a baby girl. Allegedly. This story picks up 6 years later when she's paroled to a group home and starts to dream of what her life can be, if she can only escape the past of what she did. Allegedly.
