i read this book for a college english class and really liked it! there’s lots of relatable, thought-provoking quotes and parallels to real-life issues that make you think and reflect on what’s going on around you. and it goes without saying, but butler’s writing is phenomenal <3

I enjoyed it from the start, excited to read the next one.

I do kind of feel like something is missing though like there could be more to the story and some bits felt unresolved but maybe that’s what the next one’s for…

This book had me going back for a third attempt because of the narration, and because of a storyline with which I could really relate. Being lulled by the narrator's expressive full vocal range voice had me mesmerized until I was jarred out of that state by Butler's portrayal of Lauren.

So, I thought I might be having some shall we say, "systemic blockages" (a euphemism for racial bias) going on. But no I tried for a third time. A healthy ego is one thing but ... oh well maybe I should have read ahead to see if the heroine takes a fall/dies/radically transforms/ morphs into a new life form et al.

Having woken up to my auditory susceptibility now, I will be circumspect over narration quality when listening to Audiobooks and try and better discern when I am in more in love with the narrator than the author. I will waste no more of my time feeling I missed the boat because this book did not include me as one of Butler's or Lauren's chosen (readers) ;)
