I would not identify this as an enjoyable book, because the subject matter about how the democratic institutions in America are being dismantled piece by piece, but it was well written and informative. The history lessons of other democracies in history that have fallen into autocracies is much more in depth than what we learned in history class. I highly recommend this book because I think it is important and informative, but bring your barf bag.

Depressing and scary. Would love to see an update to get the authors' perspective on the past couple years after the 2018 election and as more folks finally come to terms with the fact that American democratic norms have been so rooted in racial exclusion.

Democracy cannot exist on rules and regulations alone. It needs people who act in the spirit of democracy and safeguard its existence even if it hurts themselves in the short run. This makes democracy vulnerable in a post-truth era in which polarisation gives power to those who see democracy as an annoyance on the road to power.

When in power, the keyword is forbearance: though having the ability to use power, it does not mean one should (ab)use it.

The book focuses mainly on America but also looks at Latin America and Europe to learn from the past. And although it has many factual details, it reads smoothly.

How Democracies Die is becoming a staple in disinformation, post-truth era literature and is a must-read for every 21st-century citizen.

Heel heel interessant, het enige nadeel dat gefocust is op de VSA dus de meeste namen en procedures doen geen belletje rinkelen
