I described this book to multiple people and their responses were along the lines of “that sounds really good”, which means either I am a fantastic storyteller or that like I thought - the pieces were all here for a great book and it just failed to deliver.

I won’t deny that Tryon knows how to write, but execution of the literary language unfortunately doesn’t make it enjoyable and it lacked in feel and tone.
I honestly struggled so hard to get through the pages of this one. The tedious and dry way in which it was told just left me bored and given the elements of the plot it also lacked any feelings of the tense dread that should have accompanied it.

The cast honestly seemed non-plussed with the amount of awful things happening around them and it sucked the realism right out of it.

The twist felt incredibly obvious but given it was written in 1971, I will allow some leeway there as it’s likely to have more surprising without 50 years of media that followed it.

A story that, in someone else’s hands could have been great. Sadly it was a miss.
