3 Stars I guess... IDK. Interesting idea but slow pacing. I expected more

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't exciting or particularly crazy. It just was good. It was weird and strange and a bit creepy, but I loved it all the same. There wasn't a plot per se, but it still managed to keep me reading. The writing style is odd, not because of the first person, but just the way it was structured. It was simple enough to follow and kept me engaged throughout the story. Louisa is a weird character to me. I didn't hate her even though she was selfish, unlikable, and wishy washy. Normally, her type of character would have me screaming in frustration, but she worked for the story. I'm not sure exactly if I want to finish the series, but it's an interesting first book

This was a long ass introduction to a new trilogy???? series???? duology?????? that I'll DEFINITELY keep reading.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR THE FOUND FAMILY TROPE TO KICK IN

Anyway I loved the setting and the characters and the creatures and the vibes and Lee and the fact that there was a dog WHO DOESN'T DIE. Amazing.

I still think there's LOTS of worldbuilding to do, though. I hope we'll see more in the next book!

Roux's writing is a delightful Victorian throwback. I didn't find this book particularly scary, nor was I very much attached to any of the characters. The Devil... well, he wasn't very devilish. Still, this was beautifully written, and that alone has earned my rating here.

Definitely not bad by any means. It just didn't grab my interest enough to finish it.
