Had I not been in the middle of ACOTAR, I might’ve enjoyed this book more, but it feels too child like for what I was wanting currently. I don’t think this is any fault of the book, just wrong time kinda vibe. I also don’t think I’m massive on retelling, and something about the romances just feel forced.
I also feel like Shane is lacking depth as a character??

2024 REREAD:
God I somehow loved this even more than the first time I read it, can't wait to open book 2 immediately!!!!

ORIGINAL:
A treasure hunting axe weidling lesbian?? Say no more *adds to cart*

I loved this!! I have no spare time atm so I pretty much only have my lunch break at work to read, but when I got to the last 50 pages and had to put the book away I couldn't stop thinking about it... so I ended up taking a second break just to finish it. SO worth it.

There are so many things i loved about this, as a big fan of Indiana Jones and general adventure movies/books this was perfect for me, the pacing was great and we got to explore a world so rich with magic and history. I hope we get to learn even more in the sequel!

Shane and Fi themselves I am obsessed with, both of them are so stubborn and used to being alone but care deeply for their loved ones, their dynamic was a true gift.

Briar actually surprised me, I half expected to dislike him, prince's are often irritating and self obsessed (even when they're love interests I'm meant to find amazing) but this time I actually did.

My biggest complaint honestly is that we didn't get enough of Red, though it would damage her mysterious vibe if we did I suppose. I see she's on the cover of book 2 so hopefully that means more of her next time!!

Read for review
Bit difficult to get into at first, and the copy I was reading was a proof, so I didn't know at first that it was the start of a series - I worked it out when it was page 300 and there was WAY too much left to resolve in the last 100 pages!

The first in a new fantasy series, 'The Bone Spindle', this gender-flipped reimagining of Sleeping Beauty is full of action, adventure, betrayal, romance and magic. The majority of the book is told from the perspectives of Shane and Fi, with a few chapters throughout the book being told from Briar Rose's point of view. While there is plenty of action throughout the novel, the story has several drawn out segments, interrupting the flow of the story. Well developed lead characters save the story from these interruptions, and the book is perfect for fans of fairy tales with a twist, as the sleeping beauty in this story is male, and the rescuers are female. Additionally, there is a female to female pairing, adding more dimension to the original fairy tale.
Themes: Fantasy; Magic; Feminism; Romance; Curses; Relationships; Enemies; LGBTQIA+; Power.

I'm not one for retellings, and I'm aging out of YA, but I did preorder the ebook back in 2022 so it was only fair that I at least give it a try, but after 4 chapters, it's not so much that I stopped caring as much as I never started.
