This is the start of a new series about the 2 Sisters Detective Agency. Rhonda Bird is a unique attorney who gets a surprise message that her father has died. This upends her entire life, she finds out that she has a 15-yr. old half-sister, Baby, and she is named the guardian. Additionally, Rhonda has to go from CO to Los Angeles to close her dad's office and tie up his affairs. While there, she finds out that several of Baby's high school classmates are potentially being targeted, but the truth is even more sinister.
I liked Rhonda and Baby (later in the book) but not the bloody and cold attitude of the Midnight Club. The utter disconnect from humanity and the reckless killing was sickening.

The Guardian and Her Charge

Rhonda gets more than she bargained for when she goes to LA for the reading of her estranged father's will. A LOT MORE! In the form of a 15-year-old half-sister who goes by the nickname Baby.

I liked the book more than I expected to. I have had a couple of "meh" experiences with James Patterson's standalone books recently, but I had to give him another try (as I do love his Alex Cross and Women's Murder Club series).

There are ALL kinds of bumpy moments throughout this thriller. Drug dealers and cartels, a meth cook who likes being kidnapped, rich kids with far too much leeway, no responsibility, and a ton of anger that they misdirect - severely, a former contract killer, and a cop who gets close. I wasn't fond of the constant references to Rhonda's weight, but I did like that she owned it no matter, setting straight Baby and anyone else who questioned her abilities because of her size.

It was the first time I think I have listened to either of these narrators, Mela Lee and Peter Giles. They were both good. Peter is very raspy (kinda reminds me of one of the 80s Batman actors) and Mela pulled off the younger voices, along with Rhonda.

Story: 4 stars
Narration: 3.5 stars

Most of the characters were annoying and pretentious. The book is from multiple perspectives but gives you no warning as to who’s perspective your reading. To top it off, the continual fatfobia in the book makes this book a big no for me. If I wasn’t stuck on an plane with this book I wouldn’t have finished it.

I really enjoyed this book. I did not like that the story kept referencing the Lead FMC's weight but i did like that she did not self-sabotage herself. I hope there will be more in the series.
