4.5 stars __ I'll always love when a book is waaaaay weirder than expected: sucking and fucking cabana boys, amongst other things. I listened to this in a fugue state while moving and that felt right.

Not bad, a promising writer. Some stories definitely better than others, and solidly in the weird/surreal.

This collection was just weird. I didn’t really enjoy the stories ‘Rachel, Nevada’ or ‘Me, Rory and Aurora’ at all because the former was a bit too surreal and strange for me to grasp, and the latter just was not really super engaging although had a good horror vibe going with it near the end.

I really liked ‘Alvin’ and even though I’m not sure what the point of the story was. The weirdness in this really grabbed me and I loved how aloof and strange the characters were. Also special shout out for the two of tbem randomly heading to Bucharest in the middle of the story, that was fun and I liked it a lot.

I also want to say I enjoyed the two ‘Bad Mexican Dog’ stories but enjoy is not the appropriate word. I was more kind of fascinated and horrified by it but still found it really atmospheric and strange in a good way. The first half of it was better than the second half but I loved the feeling of heat and exhaustion that emanated from the page and reminded me a lot of the novella ‘Heatwave’. I have to say though I felt pretty disturbed by some of the odd things going on in it and closed the book just thinking what the actual f**k was that.

An odd one, very odd, but probably worth checking out if you are interested and want to see what it’s all about.

DNF'd this one. The only story I enjoyed remotely was the first, Alvin, about commodity traders, and I only liked that because of the ending. Bad Mexican Dog part 1 I liked okay, Part 2 made me quit the book. Rachel, Nevada I found weird (in a bad way) and impenetrable and I did not enjoy it. Me, Rory, and Aurora just bored me. Rather than rate the book, I'll just chalk it up to not being for me.

i think i found this book at the wrong time because i really didn’t like this at all. the first two short stories i did enjoy but it steadily just made me more uncomfortable. i think my problem is the exploitation.

sorry

This was just really weird, and not in an enjoyable way. I felt so confused throughout each of the stories, often shocked or horrified, and left feeling adrift after each one. I truly don’t know what each of these stories was about. Needless to say this was not for me at all, and I don’t think I’m interested in the author’s other works either.
