Eek, this is such a difficult review to write. Sadly my expectations for this book were very high and Ida B. the Queen never reached them.

Like my fellow reviewers, I struggled with deciphering what exactly the intention of this was. I originally thought it was a mixture of a biography and a history book? I was hoping that we would get a few family secrets since the author is a descendant of Ida.

Sadly, this ended up being a huge letdown, and trust me this hurts typing this during Black History Month. I will say I enjoyed gaining new knowledge about Ida's life but I think this book could benefit from better organization of the chapters and information that was shared.

Reviewing this book is tricky because it depends a lot on what you are looking for. I am fascinated by family legacies so the fact this biography is written by Wells’ great granddaughter is enough reason for me to read it. There is an obvious and beautiful personal connection and admiration displayed within the pages as she highlights the uniqueness of this outstanding American hero, but also her great grandmother! Yet it is much more than a biography, as it looks at broader issues in the African Americans struggled with and Wells rallied against. There is no deep investigative writing here, but an excellent overview and starting point. I recommend the audiobook read by the granddaughter of Ida freakin’ B. Wells!
informative reflective fast-paced

About what you'd expect when the author inserts her own unremarkable life into a biography of her great grandmother.

As a lover of graphic novels, and "books that look like they should be children's book but are for adults," this is my kind of book. Broken up with art, and stories of other Black activists, this short and amazing biography is a must read. Ida's story is interwoven with the stories of other activists from then, and now, truly tying together how we owe so much to those that came before us. I can't recommend this biography enough.

While the topic was excellent, the author got sidetracked embedding her own history as well as modern events into this disjointed narrative. I was hoping for a more personal account which was lacking as well.

I'll look for a more scholarly version of Ida's life.

A short biography of Ida B. Wells and reflection on her legacy as written by her great-granddaughter. It left me wanting more.

Great introduction to this phenomenal woman. Could have jumped around less.

Ida B Wells was surely an incredible woman, but unfortunately the writing doesn’t keep my interest throughout the book. Still very informative and interesting.
