Persuasion

Persuasion is one of the novels by Jane Austen that I was really looking forward to reread because I remembered it as being one of my favorites. This is very different from Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, for it is lacking the humor and the wit. However, the heroine is extremely likable and I may like her better than Elizabeth Bennett. Anne Elliot was an older heroine for the time when written, she is 27 when we meet her. When she was younger she was persuaded by her father and a well meaning friend to turn down the engagement of Mr. Wentworth. Years later, Anne is still not over him but has settled into her life without him. When her family living situation changes, Wentworth is brought back into her life. She steels herself to being in his presence. What I like about Anne is that she is very aware of other peoples faults but still has to put up with them as ladylike as possible. Her family while not horrible to her, do not think of her. The humor is also missing in this book but there are moments where where it is bit tongue in cheek. A solid read but not my favorite of the Janes Austen stories, even though Anne Elliot might be my favorite character, of course after the hysterical Mr. Bennett.

Originally thinking this one would be 4★ but the last three chapters sold me completely. Has a novel ever had a more dramatic letter or letter writing scene since.... Not only this, but the utmost mutual pining never before seen and never again done so well. I fear Austen has done it again

Jane Austen is wonderful. But I think I chose poor timing of when to read this one. Why did I start it during one of my busiest seasons?! I read half of it in one day and loved it. But then life got busy. I had to watch the movie to help provide understanding as I started the second half. It deserves more than three stars, but I was anxious to finish it, and didn’t enjoy the second half as much as the first half, so… I hope to try it again when I can just enjoy her writing and her characters.

This is my second read of this book after reading it for the first time less than 6 months ago. It doesn't matter that it's so recent. It doesn't matter that I remembered exactly what would happen and when. From that moment that Anne and Wentworth meet up at the concert, the mounting emotion and tension swept me away once more, just as they did the first time I read it. Once more I was caught up in the tender, desperate romance, and I simply loved every minute of it.

Surely, if there be constant attachment on each side, our hearts must understand each other ere long.

All the stars! Five just for that letter, oh that swoon-worthy letter! One of my favorite reads of this year for sure, and a new all-time favorite as well. The slow burn of this book is something else, and I was not prepared. Because we are in Anne's quiet mind for most (if not all?) of the story, this book seems so soft and composed but oh, it is full of all the passion and longing and regret of an epic second-chance romance. This was my first time reading it, and I absolutely adored it. It is now one of my favorites, second only to P & P.

Jane Austen July 2022 Prompt 1: Read one of Jane Austen’s main six novels.

SLOWER than pride and prejudice but SO WORTH IT, the ENDING, the LETTER, AHHHHHH (the movie tdid this one so so so dirty)
