This book is beautifully written and constructed. Sad, gorgeous, highly recommend!
No way this can clear the hype it's built on, but it comes closer than I expected given the very self-absorbed middle third or so. Even that, however, ends up necessary to the final stretch.
The narrator in this book is so genuinely human; that may sound a little funny, but it can be rare to find a narrator who is honest, flawed, and believable. While this book is a fictional novel, it reads like a collection of essays, all centering on experiences within the narrator’s life and the theme of being Muslim in America. It was brilliantly written and very profound.

4.5 stars. While not all Muslim-American experiences in the U.S. are the same, this book is a good example of many people’s experiences and what it’s like to live in a country surrounded by Islamophobia.

Very thought provoking & I honestly learned a lot from constantly having to look up words and references. The fictional memoir style is a little trippy but once I got used to it I was very invested. Btw I’m a Fatima Stan- wish we got more about her than Sikander but it is very much a man’s perspective.
This book will stay with me for a long long time.
Side note: The author did an incredible job narrating the book.

Although it did get a little slow in sections, the book overall was a fascinating, nuanced perspective of a 2nd generation immigrant and intellectual.
