Maybe a four...I wasn’t impressed. There were parts of the book that were incredible and other parts where I was left thinking huh?

Great commentary on what it can be to grow up a Muslim in the US.

I listened to this book, which I recommend. The author has a great voice for narration.
This is the story of an American playwright and his tumultuous American identity, as well as the identities of his immigrant parents.
Aside from (what I thought to be) unnecessary brags of sexual exploits, this is a wonderful book.

Very insightful on multiple fronts. I'll be thinking about this one ongoing...

Smart, interesting. Reads like essays. Does not feel like a novel.

Slow start, but got mostly into it by the end — the parts that lost me were rants abt trump and how bad he was, which kind of feels like old news/overdone at this point

I wanted to enjoy this book so bad, but I just couldn't get into it. There wasn't a clear direction or point. It felt like a stream of consciousness for a story, especially when coming to find out that although it's written as a memoir, it is apparently fiction??

I liked and hated this book. I know it was a fictionalized version of his life, but I could actively google to get around the names he assigned real people... so it got confusing. I also, while appreciating that it takes talent and skill to get a visceral reaction out of me, spent a lot of time yelling that he was using over complicated words that were unnecessarily complicated, which made me feel like he just wanted to prove how smart he is. And. i liked side characters a lot more than the main character.

Super super cool - I love a memoir, and it was interesting to read a memoir without knowing what actually happened or not - with the obvious takeaway that regardless of what happened, it all COULD have happened. I feel like I understand a really specific culturally muslim perspective that I didn't before.

Pretty intense look at what it feels like and means to be the stranger and selected enemy based solely on fear and racist ideals embedded in your own country. Many illuminating thoughts ranging from Trumpism, religion, sexuality to simply our place in the world. Excellent book. 5 stars
