A bit too abstract for me, but there are some fun absurdist bangers and a few heartbreakingly concrete poems.

Some of the poems I really loved but others I found hard to get through.
I think the truth is that I just don’t like poetry that much.

LOVE! I read for my poetry class and is so far my favorite :). Super quick read and super interesting! I’d say for mature readers although some of it is pretty funny with a dark undertone.

This collection features some of the strangest, trippiest poetry I have ever read! Lockwood leads readers on a surreal journey as she envisions Walt Whitman sending nudes, pubescent teens as animorphs, the patriarchy as gorilla-suited actors, and more. Her most effective and powerful poems are those with a feminist bent that focus on toxic masculinity and sexual assault.
In one of my favorite poems in this collection, "Revealing Nature Photographs," Lockwood envisions nature as a pile of hardcore pornographic photos. What results is a poem that is simultaneously a statement on environmental exploitation and toxic masculinity.
Here's a snippet:
(cw: sexually explicit language)
"The pictures were so many they started to move. Let me watch for the rest of my natural life, you said and sank down in the field and breathed hard. Let me watch and watch without her knowing, let me see her where she can't see me. As long as she can't see me, I can breathe hard here forever. See nature do untold animals sex, see nature's Sicko Teen Farm SexFeest, see her gush like the geyser at Yellowstone, see the shocking act that got her banned in fifty-one states including Canada. See men for miles around give nature what she needs, rivers and rivers and rivers of it. You exhale with perfect happiness. Nature turned you down in high school.
Now you can come in her eye."
