“The books that the world calls immoral are books that show the world its own shame.”

The Picture of Dorian Gray was one of my #1 5-star prediction and I have to say that it absolutely did not disappoint. I love, love, love, Oscar Wilde (as we all know), and I think reading this becomes so much more meaningful exactly because I learned about Wilde's life. Oscar Wilde is incredibly gifted when it comes to writing about humans and the imperfections of our souls - the dark sides. There is something about how beautifully this book was written while talking about, well, very dark not very beautiful things.

The opening few chapters immediately hooked me. I only had a vague idea of the premise, and the novel is so much richer than I expected. It can feel dense at times, but still easy to grasp overall. Lots of literary and historical allusions that went over my head. I appreciated that I could recognize the influence it had on novels like American Psycho and Poor Things. It's one of my new favorites in the Gothic genre, and one that will reward rereading.

Prefer Oscar Wilde’s scriptwriting over his prose. Very dense and easy to get lost. Story felt sluggish and characters were constantly TALKING about what they did rather than actually doing it. Found it a rather frustrating read.
