3.5. Definitely a high 3.5 but just not as good as the first. Where was Jack?!? We needed more of him! Anyway, it was one of those books you could read a bunch of pages and still not much happened. It was interesting to see Lily’s dynamic with her dad though, and that last chapter has me jonesing for a third book!

What a charming book. It sets itself apart from others in this genre for me by not making the romance full focus and insufferable. The protagonist is widowed and the exploration of feelings that accompany her as she sets up a new life in London are subtly and wonderfully written!

Another enjoyable Lily Adler mystery. We delve into more of her background in this book, as well as a decently thought out mystery to solve. Our beloved characters from the first book return, as well as the introduction of some new ones that I am sure we'll continue to see in other books.
A solid sequel to the first debut novel.

The twist was obvious to me from very early on and yet I'm not mad at the book.

Some of that is because Schellman engrosses me with the period details. I'm particularly impressed by her inclusion of diversity (the two mixed-race co-detectives and, specifically, the autistic characters in this book), while giving the protagonist attitudes that don't quite square with 21st century ideas.
While the autistic characters were pretty minor supporting cast here (there's a good chance one or both of them will recur), I love that they were not carbon copies. This would be a great prop for explaining how the autistic spectrum works.

4,5 stars. I like the second book even more than the first one. The team consists of Lily Adler, the brain of the operation, Captain Jack, her right hand, doing all the fun stuff lady cannot do (for example monitoring activity of young gentlemen at night, visiting gambling dens, etc) and Simon Page, the investigator from Bow street, tasked with going around, asking question people actually does not want to answer. The murder itself is also more interesting with wider range of suspect then the previous novel. An old lord was murdered, and we are left with a young wife, a loving son, and a nephew with debts and the old question of motive: love or money? Or both?
