A Comparison Between the Book and the Musical
I saw the musical yesterday, and had finished the book just the day before. The musical was fantastic. The music, setting, props, and costumes were great. I felt the significance of the mask, chandelier, and shadows. Brilliant. My favorite setting was the lake and the phantom's "lair". They looked so amazing, and the candles were a very nice touch. The music, the great voices, and the phantom's laugh made it more majestic. And the organ too. Overall, it was very impressive and grand. I loved it. However, in comparison with the novel, the storyline in the novel is better. I was disappointed that the Persian and his part, his backstory with Erik, and the torture chamber scene were cut out from the musical. Although, I guess they would be difficult to put in a musical. And the book, of course, does not have music or magnificent set additions. Both the book and the musical have their pros and cons. The book's story is better, but the musical is very much more grand and awe-inspiring.

Ik dacht altijd dat Le Fantôme de l'Opéra van origine een Engelstalig boek was. Misschien een wat vreemde gedachtegang aangezien dit zich duidelijk in Parijs afspeelt, maar ik zag er dus geen graten in om dit in een Engelstalige editie te kopen. Ik probeer zo veel mogelijk in de originele taal te lezen, maar aangezien mijn Frans toch niet goed genoeg is (ergens wel, maar ik doe er dan gewoon te lang over naar mijn goesting) ging het sowieso toch een Nederlandse vertaling zijn en laat ik nu net even vlot in het Engels als in het Nederlands lezen.
Een lange aanloop dus om te zeggen dat er waarschijnlijk wat Engelse namen in deze review zullen passeren. Net zoals zovelen was ik op zich al wel bekend met het verhaal van Gaston Leroux. De verfilmingen zijn bijna ontelbaar (en ook enorm wisselend qua kwaliteit, vergelijk de versie uit 1943 met een geweldige Claude Rains maar eens met het misbaksel dat Dario Argento er van maakte) en toch blijft dit enorm fris. Een kort boekje, mijn versie heeft maar een goede 110 bladzijden geloof ik, maar ook eentje dat erg vlot leest. Door de korte hoofdstukken - een overblijfsel van het feit dat dit oorspronkelijk in serial vorm in de Franse kranten is uitgebracht - krijg je vaak zin om er nog eentje meer te lezen en voor je het weet bevind je je met Raoul en de Persian in de martelkamer. Alleen jammer dat het verhaal daar opeens zijn drive begint kwijt te spelen en dat Leroux zijn boek met een anti-climax van jewelste eindigt. Ik had toch nog net iets meer een confrontatie tussen de grote held en de grote slechterik verwacht, maar die blijft uit. Toch een beetje teleurstelling als je het mij vraagt.
Ik ben altijd wel fan van dit soort oude "griezelverhalen". Ik heb nog altijd net iets meer een voorkeur voor het werk van Robert Louis Stevenson, maar dit stond toch ook garant voor twee vermakelijke avondjes. Beetje jammer van het wat abrupte einde dus, maar ik begin me af te vragen of ik geen geknipte versie heb gelezen aangezien ik nergens krantenartikels of politieverhoren zoals Wikipedia beschrijft heb gezien..

This is a masterclass in how to write complex and tragic characters. Through all that the phantom has done you can’t help but feel as though he has a kind heart, really. And the ultimate tragedy is that he would have been such a gentle soul if the world had shown him some kindness. Leroux has created a character that makes you want to sob, not so much for his ending but for his soul. He could have been so much more.
Also, Raoul de Chagny my poor, naïve, innocent boy. He loved Christine so dearly. You can’t help but root for him.
This novel is full of brilliant storytelling, crafty plot twists, and complicated characters you can’t help but get behind. They really just don’t write them like this anymore.

Took me A WHILE to finish it but now that I've done it I kinda regret not getting through it sooner. I now need to make more research on this story cause wth. You will see me dive deep into it and watch the movies, the musicals and read articles. Anyway, bring back the real yearners.
