Wow!!! I completely fell in love with this story!! The setting was absolutely magical and every single character had such depth and such a good story arc without overtaking the main plot. The writing was stunning and truly enchanting. I listened to the audiobook and it was exquisitely done!

This story was very interesting because it left me surprised with the ending and plot twist. I didn’t think I would be so invested in this story because of the long chapters. But with the audiobook and the overall story, I was able to listen/read it and throughly enjoy it.

I actually wanted to DNF this at about 40% in.
I decided to push through to see if it got better and whether it would hold a flame to Divine Rivals.
Although it has parallels to the vibes Divine Rivals had, it’s not the same in its ability to capture interest and demonstrate a sense of urgency as the plot progresses.

The characters are bland, in fact, I don’t think any of them had qualities worthy of mentioning or that make them unique enough to root for. There is a disconnect in the narrative since it fails to follow any of the 4 characters closely enough to layer any concrete character traits.

The fantasy and ambiance is really good, Ross actually kills it on that point, she has a very poignant story to tell, but doesn’t have the right tools to propel it forward. (Her characters).

There is also supposed to be a level of political intrigue underlying the plot and character’s origins that falls flat due to the political foundation being poorly set up for the “big” execution.

I wanted to see more magic and character development along with conflict that was more urgent than they made it seem.

There are deadass children being kidnapped and they are doing so little to get answers ASAP. The length of this storyline and its conclusion as a whole is so lacklustre. It only serves to feed into the plot twist that was one of the biggest predictable cliches of any kind of royal/elite government/system.

I don’t really recommend this one to people who want to read something similar to DR, but it’s worth trying. Just don’t be afraid to DNF because pushing through doesn’t really get you anywhere either.

This is the second time I have read this book. I read it for the first time in July 2022 as a library book and since then, I have bought the hardcover and gotten it signed and personalized by the author (along with the 2nd book) and have this paperback. I haven’t read the 2nd book but I suddenly have the itch to and I reread this in preparation.

I love this story so much. I love the prose Ross uses and she how she describes and paints a picture of Cadence. The amount of emotion she pours into every scene. We get different types of relationships and get to see so many emotions come from them and where they lead to. This was one of my favorite reads of 2022 and it still remains up there in one of my favorite books ever. Can’t wait to read the 2nd book next.
