This is just a bad book. It didn't actively offend my sensibilities, but it's sloppily paced and plotted. The author fails to establish a mood or build any kind of tension, there's no sense of dread or intrigue. There are three or four strains of mystery, but none of it builds to anything and none of the dangling threads are properly tied off. A few of the twists are clumsily signposted, but there's no actual foreshadowing, new plot developments just emerge from the mist.
The protagonist's intelligence fluctuates wildly; she's exactly as stupid or as smart as she needs to be in order to move the plot forward. She's unobservant and too trusting, but also her gut feelings are always correct and she's an unerring judge of character.
