The book is mostly set in 2001. There’s your spoiler.

A good book that I really didn’t like. Says a lot about the authors talent that I did not enjoy reading this book, yet felt compelled to finish it. Dark and uncomfortable and made me feel something

I enjoyed the storyline and weirdly enough I liked the characters a lot - although some feel out of place. The writing is amazing which convinces me to get more of Otessa Moshfegh!

Some parts were quite predictable and the ending honestly pretty disappointing but nonetheless a good book. Great for in between, a palate cleanser if you will, as the story is easy to follow.

In my opinion, art should usually have a purpose. this book isn't art, doesn't have any purpose AND its annoying.

i actually don’t know what to say about this book.

edit: coming back to say that i do have something to say about this book. many people i’ve seen with this book say that they hated the narrator and ended up loving her or they just hated her all throughout, that wasn’t the case for me. from start to end i felt as though i could resonate with the narrator and her emotions—yes i know this isn’t exactly a flex—, while yes some things i did disagree with, in all and in total, her depression reminded me of my own depression, she reminded me of me. albeit again, her story is quiet different from mine, it is nice to read such a flawed character, a character that in reality i probably would hate but because im reading her thoughts, her lies and truths, i dont hate her, i dont pity her either. i just feel her.

Maybe I hated it because the whole book felt like an episode of Gossip Girl but glorifying being a trust fund drug addict.

TL;DR she could have just done DMT once and had the same result ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
