update*
im upping my review of this to 4 stars, i think i had downgraded it because i had initially been disappointed in it, but its actually a really useful and amazing guide to the world. it collects and presents all the previous and necessary info into one book, so you dont have to go back and reread to know all the important stuff that happened. Also the art is soooooooooo gorgeous, i cantget over it.

*No spoilers were harmed in the making of this review*

Hey guys, so I just finished Unlocked (Keeper of the Lost Cities, #8.5)by Shannon Messenger. It was....well, the author did say it would eb different than her normal books. ANd it was. about 60% of it was like a series guide, describing the world, the species, the characters, etc, background stuff that can be helpful when needing a 'cheat sheet' to review when the series grows bigger. But its not new information. Majority of the first halfish is information readers already know, its just repacked in a different way. And honestly, i skimmed or I just was not motivated to take time to read this. Yeah it was cool having it laid out in the manner, and will be useful for future books to read this instead of doing 9 book rereads, but other than that...it was meh. I loved the art and graphics though! Those were absolutely amazing. I truly did love the art. ANd it was cool having acomprehension guide to the series, but yeah. Now for the actual story, err, novella. To be honest, I do not think the author put much effort into it. it seemed like I was reading a first draft and she had put it out there to be like "hey guys, this is what im thinking of doing, thoughts?" it didnt feel the same as a true keeper novel? Dont get me wrong, I loved keefe's perspective, but at the same time...it wasnt filled with the same keeper magic. It didnt read like a normal keeper novel. Maybe it wasnt supposed to? THere was alot of 'downtime' and non action scenes, just characters being there and stuff, and usually thats okay, but in this novella, it just seemed kinda meh. SUre there were 'revelations' but even those did not have the same keeper build up and flare. It was just like 'yup, here it is and here are some obvious clues for you to guess the next one if you were paying attention'. SO yeah...it just kinda felt...eh, I felt disconnected. Im normally super engaged with the characters when reading, but honestly....I wasnt that much. Save for keefe, keefe will always be my baby boy. And the reason for me endlessly pulling my hair out at the STUPID and RECKLESS decisions he makes. I freaking swear, that boy is going to be the death of me. Sophie was cool and all, fiery and leader-y but eh...**sighs** i dont know...i hope im not getting too old for this series, but I think it was just the way it was written. Sure sophie has to struggle with a lot, as always, and keefe is struggling with a crap ton, and I should be more empathic, but...idk. This novella just seemed like a half botched attempt to satisfy the readers instead of waiting 2 years to make a really awesome 900page true keeper novel. Remember, this is all my opinion and if you want your own read the series. Till next time, bye.

This was my least favorite of the series. I liked it! And I thought the idea to publish something with character reports, recipes, quizzes, and more was super fun but I wanted more story! I love hearing Keefes perspective, especially the last scene with Grady (gotta be the intimidating father of the girlfriend while also understanding he might be what's best for her, ugh I love). I did like the lack of issue/failure/thing gone wrong, it did change up the pace and what I expected from the series which is fun!

As much as the first part of the book is a nice way to gather Lal information together, I didn't really enjoy it. The second part (about 33% of the book only) is a novella, sort of short story between books 8 and 9. It's useful in the series, but the book I liked the least despite the amazing artwork
