I really enjoyed this book, as per usual Kristin Hannah had me in tears. It was more personal this time since I am a female Army veteran (2010-2017) and my husband is currently active duty Army. Fortunately I was never deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan and nor has my husband been to those places. We have dealt with multiple deployments to other locations. I loved how Hannah handled the difficult subjects that affect soldiers returning from war. You get a real sense of how much soldiers and their families sacrifice when going to war. That representation is needed in books and movies so that civilians truly understand the impact. The cost of war isn't just monetary and this book explores this perfectly.

One thing that I would have cut from the book was Betsy being made fun of for her mom being a soldier. I don't think that would have been the case because the support for the war after 9/11 was pretty high. I also don't think her daughter would have treated her that disrespectfully either. After reading a few Kristin Hannah books it seems she just likes to make daughters b#tchy so that she can give them character growth. I don't think that was necessary since Michael and Jolene had great character development and growth. Regardless I enjoyed the book.
medium-paced

I read this one after reading The Nightingale but I was very disappointed. I would like to preface this by saying I am a veteran but it just seemed...well, not necessarily but almost like propaganda; and it definitely was not written as well as The Nightingale, which left me in an absolute puddle of tears. I was hoping for much more with this being my second read from her but perhaps the first book I read that was hers set the expectations too high.

Kristin Hannah absolutely never misses. This story captivated me from start to finish and made it impossible to put down. I think I feel this way after every new KH book I read, but this is my top book of hers to date.
