The emotions I felt in the beginning third of this book ARE NOT the same feelings I had in the last third of this book. As friends may tell you, I raged in the beginning of this book, I HATED Michael he was immature, cold, uncaring, and frankly, a dick. For a hundred pages I read Jolene work her ASS off to be a perfect mother— breakfasts, carpools, extracurriculars, and giving advice to her (frankly) nightmare of a child (I don’t remember being that terrible to my mom when I was 12, but Betsy could be normal for the circumstances and then a raging nightmare which) and while Jolene was trying, Michael was the WORST.
I don’t know when my feelings started to change, but slowly, Michael stopped be a self centered selfish dick and he started SEEING his children, and being there for them. I love that he finally came to understand and be proud of his wife’s service in the military but I HATE that it took him literally defending a PTSD vet accused of murdering his wife to understand what his wife sacrificed by going to Iraq and how changed she was coming home. However Michael stood by Jolene, he loved her through the challenges and waited for her to find her new normal and I appreciate that.
All in all this book, much like every other Kristin Hannah book has made me rage and sob uncontrollably.
