Beautiful
3.65 stars to be more exact. I liked this much better than her Nightingale novel. Home Front is definitely a page turner, but it is also a tearjerker, which is always a warning sign for me. Also, there were repetitions and explanations that I could do without. I couldn't help comparing this long novel with a chapter in a book that I am reading at the moment: Let the Great World Spin. That chapter is about how the Vietnam war affects an American family, and one of the main lines in Home Front is how Iraq war affects an American family. Whereas Colum McCann's style is crisp, concise, and yet breathtaking in the way it conveys the characters' sense of loss without being in the least melodramatic, Kristin Hannah's continuous return to what has already been emphasized enough decreases the effect she could have had with a terser form. Still, I found the content, if not the form, immensely absorbing and enjoyed listening to the audiobook, as well as to the interview with the author at the end.
Prepare to ugly cry. This book broke me in the best way.
Home Front is a deeply emotional, beautifully written story about love, loss, resilience, and the quiet strength it takes to hold a family together. Jolene is a mother, wife, and Black Hawk pilot who is suddenly deployed to Iraq, leaving behind a crumbling marriage and two young daughters. What unfolds is raw, heartbreaking, and completely unforgettable.
Kristin Hannah doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of war, both overseas and on the home front. The emotional weight of this story hit me hard. I cried, I ached, and I kept turning pages because I had to know how they would survive what felt unsurvivable.
If you’re looking for a book that will make you feel it all, grief, love, heartbreak, hope, this is it. But fair warning: have tissues ready. Lots of them.

Great read to get me back from a reading slump. This felt surface level for a Kristin Hannah book but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
