Generally I prefer zombie stories than vampires (possibly because I like The Walking Dead and zombie anime better than Bram Stoker's Dracula and vampire anime) but this has got to be the best vampire story I've read yet.

Unlike Bram Stoker's version of the vampire, there was no mention of the slight loss of power during the daytime, aversion to garlic, ability to climb flat walls and stakes to be driven through the vampire in this short story. Everything was pretty straightforward and I found it hard to stop reading it.

What I liked most about it was how strong the characters were. Power was given to a woman, she wasn't just a victim. I almost can't believe it was written long ago, about 50 years before Bram Stoker wrote his famous piece. There are a lot of similarities between the two stories, though. As if Stoker was "inspired" by this one or the vampire folklore just led the authors to pen similar retellings.

It's just unfortunate that the author for this book is anonymous, although I did find name associated to the book, a Karl Adolf von Wachsmann. Not sure if he really was the actual author of this amazing piece of literature.
