Murakami doesn’t get a great wrap these days, understandably for his very flat and demeaning depictions of female characters. However, this memoir seems to thankfully avoid any distasteful descriptions and focuses on Murakami’s love of running. Mostly set in the two years leading up to the NYC Marathon, this is a book that appeals to runners and fans of the author. Having interests in both, I enjoyed Murakami’s quips and honesty which was refreshing from an author who is usually guarded. If these two things are not of interest to you though, it might not be worth the read.

"If I am asked what the next most important quality is for a novelist, that's easy too: focus – the ability to concentrate all your limited talents and whatever's critical at the moment. Without that you can't accomplish anything of value, while, if you can focus effectively, you'll be able to compensate for an erratic talent or even a shortage of it."
