I do not recommend this book. I finished it not because I wanted to but because I felt I had to.  And now  I would like to forget I read it.  I loved “A Little Life” but this was hard to read.  Not just for the subject matter but just hard to read.

This book got really dark, really fast. The main character is so hateable, and complex, even before you get to the dramatic reveal. The writing is beautiful and gets really visceral. The pace got a little slow in the middle, but picked up considerably.

ok several things :
  • this is Yanagihara's best writting, while the plot might not be as thought out as To Paradise or A Little Life, her way of making that jungle feel alive and breathing is truly beautiful.
  • reading this after her newer two books is really funny bc you can see she had ideas for her later works already here(from the orphanage where Tallent was raised named St Jude, the work in the lab that parallels part III from To Paradise)
  • an upsetting story in general, this books not only delves into sexual abuse but colonialism, Yanagihara doesn't shy away from how a white man from america (Norton) would think not only of the island and the people in it but of the children he adopts later on. How he shifts when they aren't the most grateful children and adoring him.

There's a reviewer here who said that they would like this from one of the childrens perspective and i agree, while it might resemble A Little Life more (plot wise) it would be very interesting bc i was left wondering if the older kids knew (aside from the ones he assaulted), did Norton make them believe that was an experience in every household? Did he make them believe he was attaching them to their culture by doing the ritual that the villagers would do? From the older kids after the christmas incident did any of them know that would happen? was that why they left in such a hurry?

I have a lot of thoughts and i'm unable to find the proper words but i would truly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Hanya's works.
