A Little Life is my favourite book so i was really looking forward to this but i was soooo disappointed and bored. The writing itself is faultless and gorgeously descriptive but that’s also my issue with the book. The plot is scarcely going past surface level with the majority of character development being skipped for another richly detailed paragraph about native fruit or trees (which after 150 pages seriously do not need to be detailed more than once or twice). Rarely did we get an insight into feelings, emotions or characteristics of the characters and i ended up wishing away pages just to get to the next snippet into character information we would get… Not even going to discuss the note this book is left on because like damn what was the fucking point but anyway lets all be thankful this book is over

I simply cannot get over this holier than thou attitude that both the doctor and his research assistant? person writing the memoir, idk i don't remember, have. also the fake tribe and fake possible colonization by a fake white man wasn't sitting right with me. where hanya's flowery descriptive prose shines in a little life it's horrible here, clunky and tedious. i found myself getting actually physically tired from trying to get through a chapter
