So yeah, that was really good. With any luck the rest are just as good, and I will get round to reading those soon. The whole thing felt more like a set-up than anything else, and after all I've heard about C. S. Lewis on the internet I did snicker to myself [in a library with people close by, I might add] at the fairly blatant Aslan = God parallels, especially followed by the direct mentions of Adam and Eve.

I'mma do what I've decided is best for series, and review the whole of The Chronicles of Narnia as one entity once I've read them all.

Me a gustado.

It's like Alice in Wonderland but with slightly less LSD.

Ok, this is like Narnia's Attack of the Clones. Prequel's can be well done, sure. However, they must be able to stand on their own merits without depending on favourable impressions of the author or the success of other episodes of the franchise. This poorly cobbled together effort could not. The plot is thin, the allegory so blunt that God should be suing for copyright infringement, and the references to the other books so brazen and clumsy that I'm not sure he should have bothered. Witness, "That was the beginning of all the comings and goings between Narnia and our world, which you can read of in other books." "...for Digory was the sort of person who wants to know everything, and when he grew up he became the famous Professor Kirke who comes into other books."
Inexplicably, there is a cast of characters at the beginning of The Magician's Nephew which includes the characters from all Narnia books, most of which do not appear in the volume it is attached to. Ok to include in that fat bound omnibus of the whole series, but very weird to a reader new to the series picking up this volume.
Like in so many cases, the greedy desire to cash in on the franchise makes for a poor stand-alone, not adding much value to the whole. I can see how the zealous C.S.Lewis was tempted beyond forbearance to get the Garden of Eden into the set, but this reads more like an advertising brochure of upcoming goodies written in the margins of Genesis than a new classic.
Another problem is the disconnect between his quite proficient vocabulary and description and the crudity of the portrayals. It reads like he is talking down to child readers and not giving them any credit beyond simple naivety. However, I get a feeling that this, and the allegorical bludgeoning, are not going to change as I get through the other books.
The only redeeming element for me was the oh-so-posh dialogue between characters. I am busy planning ways to squeeze into conversation gems like, " a jolly cruel thing to do" "do stop jawing!" and "By gum!"
On to Lion, Witch, and Wardrobe!

It was an interesting prelude. I'm glad I read it, though I hope it doesn't overshadow the rest of my reading of the series. I found it, at times, to be slow, but the end result was an interesting and intriguing chronicle.
