So gorgeously written I hated to see it end.

Rounding up from what my initial rating would have been, because I feel I became less forgiving of the aspects of the book I didn't like after I read a line that the author lifted directly from No Country for Old Men. (I understand that this happens, since, as a reader, I am guilty of adopting favorite phrases; however, I am not a writer profiting off of others' clever remarks.)

Absolutely wild, psychedelic, and spectacular. A nameless bride is preparing for her wedding at a hotel, but then her dead grandmother visits her as a bird and tells her not to get married and to find her estranged brother. The grandmother-bird also poops on her wedding dress. It's a universal fact that a story featuring an avian and wedding dress-pooping dead grandmother is bound to be good. This novel is a lovely mix of comedy and tragedy - later we find out that the bride has some unresolved issues from her unpleasant past.

Hard to follow and a bit absurd at times but redeemed by a beautiful ending

Parakeet is surreal realism anchored by very real trauma and how it affects everything we touch. It was so beautifully written. Could not recommend this book more highly. Sincerely wonderful read.
