This was the romance novel with a people pleasing protagonist that I wished Happy Place could match. Hazelwood has done it again; this book is absolutely bonkers in a "this-is-clearly-fiction" kind of way but the characters still feel very grounded and easy to like. The intimate scenes were truly intimate. Would read again.
I think Ali Hazelwood gets a lot of unnecessary shit for all her books being about the "same topics/tropes/types of people" but she has such a way of crafting real, flawed characters that I could give less of a shit. I am the least sciencey person in the world and I ate this up.
I really enjoyed the growth of both the characters, the side cast, the banter (not too try hard like a lot of contemporary romances IMO) and the overall concept.
I think Elsie is such a lovely character, and even though I got frustrated with her a bit toward the end, I really loved her. Despite trying to make everyone love her (mirrorball, anyone?) I really think her ability to own up to that, to know what she was doing and why, was so thought-provoking and real.
Being a human sucks. I related to her. Jack was HOT and smart. A true sign he was a man written by a woman but alas, I cling to crumbs where I can find them. Wonderful read!
