First, I would recommending reading the book versus the audio. I purchased the audio version and the narrator’s voice (Eva Hamilton) got on my nerves so bad-it was difficult to get through the book. I really enjoy Mary’s books as she is such a talented writer. I did purchase the e-book and definitely better.

When they were young Rouke and Kate were in love and a tragedy tore them apart. They went their separate ways as she became and wife and mother and her husband was killed on a job site. Turns out Rouke, a highly successful business man owns the company. He then finds out the widow is Kate and he is obsessed with picking up where they left off. He wonders if the daughter may be his? A secretary who is out of her element and a niece who drives him crazy.

On the anniversary of Kate’s daughter’s birthday, she write a letter in a journal which she never mails to the man who holds her heart. Another story of second chances. Can the big city businessman and the small town girl really turn back time and pick up where they left off, or will secrets and lies destroy them?

Second chances

I wanted to like this book more. I don't know what about it made me not.
I really liked it up until the point that Rourke went back to Montpelier. Then everything moved around so fast and jumped around so much at times I felt like I was on a Tilt A Whirl.
I liked the flashbacks and the journal entries.
I enjoyed Julia and Abbie and their schemes.
I just wish I liked Kate and Rourke as adults more than I did. I didnt think the development was there between them, even with the flashbacks and journal entries.

I'm not a huge fan of romance novels, but every once in a while, one comes along worth reading. Sadly, The Way They Were didn't cut the grade. The story started out well enough, but then it degraded into silly sex scenes and predictable scenarios. The characters actually became more unlikable as the book progressed. The Kindle edition is very badly edited. I had a hard time finishing this book.

I loved this book, it was such a lovely story and I really enjoyed seeing the characters develop. This is the first Mary Campisi book I've read but I'll definitely be reading more.

I should've known this was a romance novel . . . The guy's name is a dead giveaway - Rourke Flanagan. The woman is a dope, like most of these type of books portray women. The plot Judy got more ridiculous as time went on. The pacing was uneven, and I really had to force myself to finish it. The description on Amazon made it sound much better than it was.
