Wie ist es, in einem Auffanglager zu leben? Eine Situation, die für die meisten Westler wenig nachvollziehbar ist. Sulaiman Addonia nimmt uns in seinem Buch mit in ein Flüchtlingslager im Sudan und zeigt uns das Unmenschliche und das Menschliche eines solchen Lebens.
Dabei erzählt der Autor feingliedrig, poetisch, aber auch voller Kraft von Saba, die sich nicht in ihr Schicksal fügen will. Schon früh begehrt sie auf, muss mehr als einmal dafür zahlen, steht aber immer wieder auf. Vor allem ihre tiefe Beziehung zu ihrem stummen Bruder ist unvergesslich geschildert.
Durch die Lektüre dieses Werkes wird uns vor Augen geführt, dass das Leben im Flüchtlingslager noch immer von Menschen bestritten wird. Von Menschen mit Träumen und Zielen. Dass aber alle anders damit umgehen. Manche verrohen, manche geben auf. Manche kämpfen, manche träumen.
Schönheiten und Grausames wechseln sich hier ständig ab, gehen oft Hand in Hand. Das Eine kann zum Anderen führen und wieder zurück. Saba ist eine Figur, die Eindruck schindet. Man leidet mit ihr, hofft mit ihr. Und so entsteht in unseren Köpfen ein glaubhaftes Bild des Lagerdaseins.
Addonia schafft mit seinem Buch Verständnis, klärt auf und leistet einen wichtigen Beitrag dazu, wie wir mit Flüchtlingen umgehen. Gerade deshalb sehr empfehlenswert, vor allem auch für jene, die direkten Kontakt mit Betroffenen haben und bei Leuten in ihrer Umgebung Verständnis schaffen möchten.

I feel like every review of this book calls it raw and beautiful, but that’s what it is. It’s sometimes hard to follow because of the style of the dialogue (no quotation marks) and the abrupt violence and sex scenes make this read sort of jarring but that’s also what makes it raw.
I docked half a star because I was irritated at the lack of TOC (maybe it would be too long) but mostly by the ending. It was also sort of abrupt and raw-edged but unlike most of the other times in this book, I did not like it. It just felt a little unfinished. Maybe that is realistic giving the reality of refugees and what exactly is happening at the end of the book but I wish we even got just a few more answers. It’s also painfully short I could have kept reading this.

I wanted to, but it was overdue :( Will try again in the future. I liked the first few pages a lot, which is why I decided to return it so that I can read it more slowly.
