This was so good. Sooo good and sad and sweet and I loved all the book references (mainly to Outlander). She did seem younger than 18 but the way the world is going I feel about 85 so there's that.
I. Loved. This. Bookish and sweet and just a really great YA romance with deeper layers.
A little bit of magical realism, a bookstore, and summer in northern Michigan. This book was just what I needed.

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. THIS IS A MUST READ! I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN.
Ok, so I didn’t expect to like this book as much as I did. I didn’t even know it existed until I spotted it at the library. It felt like fate. I saw it through the end of one of the shelves and picked it because my name is Amelia too. However this instantly became one of my favorite books. If you’re thinking about reading this, you definitely should.

2023 Challenge ➳ Judge a Book by Its Cover. Read all of the books on my “Beautiful Covers” shelf!
(So yes, as you can see, I have set a challenge for myself this year - to read all of the books I haven't yet read whose covers I find visually appealing! This challenge is mainly to give me ease about what book I should read next.)
I felt very borderline on Amelia Unabridged. I could have rated it 4 stars, I could have rated it 3.5, but there was just something missing for me.
The book is 290 pages; the details of Amelia's life and the development of her relationships with other characters were lacking because the plot is squeezed in in such a short amount of time. The book being longer would have increased my appreciation for it and decreased my disgust for the very prevalent instalove.
Yes, you heard me. Amelia meets her love interest a little ways through the book, and within a week (like 150 pages) she is not only head over heels for him, but she completely leaves her entire life behind, moving 15 hours away just for him.
This is completely absurd, especially given that the two don't get off to a great start; they both have their own trauma, grief, and anxiety to work through that act as barriers to their relationship. The book very much has the tone that "love heals all," which is thoroughly ridiculous. Meeting someone with a pretty face is not going to miraculously get you through crippling issues.
All that being said, there was plenty to like about Amelia Unabridged. It had the "cozy book store" and "heartwarming summer read" vibes, which obviously I can't complain about. The characters were strong, and it was very well written.
(This is like the tenth book I've read that is three stars. Book gods, save me from the mediocrity!

I am simply amazed that this is a book by a debut author! This book is incredibly well written and I loved everything about it. It’s YA without the teenage angst. It’s a love story without the drama. It’s a book about books which this reader loves. There is also a story within a story that I wish were another book I could pick up and read right now.
I did not read the synopsis before starting the book, so I was very invested in Amelia and Jenna’s relationship and my heart was broken when Jenna died. Because her character was so well developed in the very short time she was alive in the beginning of the book, the author did a fantastic job keeping her alive to the reader through the rest of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Wednesday Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.

Parts of Amerlia Unabridged absolutely sparkle. Schumacher writes earnestly and thoughtfully, producing gorgeous descriptions that genuinely made me fall in love with reading all over again. Of course, I can't point to specific quotes at this time; you'll just have to trust me that there are some beautiful, heartbreaking bits and pieces in here.
Other parts err on the side of trite and predictable. I felt like the author couldn't quite decide if she wanted to write a typical teenage love story (which wouldn't be a bad thing) or a more complex young adult coming-of-age. Of course, I was reading an unedited manuscript, so I can't know for sure what this story will be by its official release. I'm excited to see the final product, and even more excited to see what Ashley Schumacher produces after this. She has a ton of potential, whatever she chooses to focus on!
