I have not read any other Spider-Man comics, but I can say from a reader/writer's perspective that the portrayal of Peter Parker in this comic was incredibly relatable and full of depth. His characterization and experiences combined in this first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man truly provide a dimension to the character that cannot be ignored; one cannot help but feel his pain, his fear, and his sense of victory in even the smallest of instances. I would recommend this book to anyone who is trying to get into the Marvel universe, or trying to get into reading comics in general. It definitely spurred my interest!

Bendis when he first started out and didn't write every character with the exact same way of talking. Pretty good

If you've seen the movies you already know pretty much exactly what happens here. Decent intro to spider-man but nothing groundbreaking.

Holy crap, a Spider-Man comic I actually like! That is pretty amazing. The art is good, the writing outstanding, and seeing Parker grow into his role as Spider-Man is wonderful to read. And I actually like Peter in this! Why did I wait so long to read this series?

Bendis doesn't change much to the origin, and contextualizes for a modern audience. Not a fan of Monster Green Goblin.
