As far as plots go, this one wasn’t terribly gripping -- but then again, by the end I could feel my mood changed from pondering the doctrines of the gospel explored in the novel. A major character (who we’ve already met in Stansfield’s previous books) faces a terminal disease; thus the family tries to shape lasting memories with him before the separation that death will bring. One of the major themes of the story was the family’s grieving of his loss, which occurred while he was still living because they had time to prepare for his death. In some ways it seemed to make the death easier.

As far as plot twists go, this novel was — I’ll be blunt — boring. But I don’t think Stansfield was going for intrigue here, and she does a masterful job of invoking the spectrum of feelings accompanied by the trial of illness and death.
