Egan is a great writer.
People compare so many story-tellers to weavers at a loom, and I’d say Egan is a spider at a web. Masterfully spinning you in.
I’m glad that I read “A Visit from the Good Squad” the week prior to reading this. I don’t think I would have picked up on half as much of this tale as I did.
There’s plenty of quiet commentary full of insight on social media, privacy, and technology. The implied viewpoint on these subjects is one I generally agree with.
While technically remarkable and precise in presentation, I do happen to find her writing clinical at times. I tend to become more engrossed by the story with very little of the book left to go, when the threads start coming together and I get to regard the web. This was the case here, with Lulu the Spy as the chapter that finally Connected to me.
I struggled to stay engaged with this brilliant novel. I felt similarly to “Goon Squad” while moving through it. Personally, the connected vignettes through complicated and morally questionable counter-culture people does not move me to feeling much of anything.
All in all, very impressive writing that I did not enjoy beyond an intellectual appreciation.
