Two and a half months and two library copies later!
It’s near impossible for me to consider these books without the attached movies, just because I’ve recently rewatched them all. That means that a lot of the time, visual descriptions of characters and sometimes locations are a bit lost on me, since no matter what Tolkien writes, I’m gonna picture Boromir as Sean Bean. This isn’t a bad thing, I just know Tolkien is known for his image drawing, but for me it was mostly just filler.
That being said, I still thoroughly enjoyed this read, despite knowing roughly the plot. There are enough extra events, nuanced details, and world building to keep the book standing on its own. Even things that would normally annoy me, I thought were great additions to this story. For example, the whole “vague history of Middle Earth” stuff used to annoy me in discussions, because you never get a full story, but in the read through I now can appreciate that it is in the end just a world building device, a really good one at that.
Near the end I started reading the characters lines out loud (specifically when Sean Bean says “It is a gift!”) and I think I’m going to do that in my read of The Two Towers

I have had a lot of LOTR marathons and such so I felt like it was time to read the actual book. The story is different then the movie, which I think is fine. The main happenings are still there but some things just go a little bit different and there is a lot more of background information in the book then there was in the movie. A very good book and I will start the second one right away.

this book is so dense oml. i feel like i need to watch a youtube video to explain the lore to me. as a new reader of tolkien i know the basic plot, but i think this is like the one case where i enjoyed the movie more than the book. i still want to finish the trilogy as a fantasy reader, but DAMN this was tough to read. i’m v interested in aragorn’s character in this book. also sam and frodo give gay realness… anyways

this book, while a harder read, was worth it with the friendship that forms between the characters and the different challenges the fellowship experiences.

I can’t even begin to say how good this book is. It’s perfection. JRR is a storytelling and world building expert.
