This was definitely better than the first. Loved how much darker this one was!

Kingdom of the Cursed brings Emilia to Hell. She has agreed to marry the Devil in order to find out what happened to her sister and protect her family. But the more Emilia learns about her heritage, the more she doubts the deal she made with Wrath.

This was a slower moving book, but I really enjoyed it. We see Emilia develop more agency for herself. She's beginning to trust her body and disregard the sexist and misogynistic human teachings of the church. I loved seeing Emilia embrace her inner darkness, her sensuality and her power. It was intoxicating to watch. And then there's the whole Wrath vs. Emilia dynamic. Oh god, I loved it so much in this book. I don't know what was different, but I was SO invested.

For a lot of the book, we're left wondering where things are going. And I'm still wondering after I finished. There's a lot of exploration of the witches history and their part in the bargain between the first witch and the Devil. While we do get an idea of what happened, I still want to know more. There were quite a few plot twists, some I did call (and was happy about) and a couple that surprised me.

Bottom line is this sequel surprised me and I'm excited for book 3!

When I had read the initial installment of this book I gave it an abysmal 1.5 stars (at the time the lowest rating I had ever given on The Storygraph) for it's confusing pacing, lackluster ending and unsatisfying cliffhanger. I am happy to report that despite a few flaws that I would still love to see remedied in the overall pacing and delivery of certain reveals, the sequel is far and away an improvement to the series as a whole. Frankly I was still a bit frustrated after the first book did such a disservice to Wrath that I did spoil some of the major plot twists before I actually read them. Despite knowing what was coming however the book keep my attention and still played the reveal cards well. The romance building between Emilia and Wrath only continues to shine in this installment and thankfully the author seems to turn much more of her attention to unraveling the story of their curse rather than diving immediately back into the mystery of Vittoria's death.

Ultimately this installment leaves me eagerly anticipating the finale, as well as making me consider revisiting the first novel to see if I really read everything the way I thought I did since this seems to be such a departure from the writing style I remembered.

I know a lot of people love this series, and I can see the appeal, but it just wasn't really my cup of tea. This book definitely takes a large jump into more new adult than young adult, which is totally fine! It's kind of in the same line as [book:A Court of Thorns and Roses|16096824] and that kind of book, which a lot of people love! But the politics and some of the magic rules were a bit confusing to me.

There were also some scenes in this book that were kind of cringy for me. Specifically when it came to will and attraction, and if you read this book, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. These scenes between Emilia and Wrath didn't quite sit right with me, and I kind of wish they weren't even included.

Anyway, Emilia and Wrath did have good chemistry, I just wish that the politics in this book made more sense to me. Maybe it's because I listened to the audio? Who knows. We'll see if I continue on with the next one (though there is a cliffhanger and I might need to know how it finishes).
-----
I'm just not in the mood for this right now, might wait until the library gets the audiobook version instead because that's how I listened to the first book!

This book was really good and fun to read. Some aspects of it were a bit too predictable like
Wrath's name
This book is mainly character driven over world building and fantasy like the first book. You get to really look into
Wrath's and Emilia's relationship
Warning for those who are uncomfortable with sexual scenes. It is a bit spicy in all kinds of aspects an not just with certain characters.

Thoroughly entertaining if not confusing at some points.

The book definitely kept you on your toes and made you wonder what could possibly come next. I'm definitely looking forward to the third and final book!
